The types of the houses,
as we have seen, change in the course of the years and adopt the peculiar
characterizations of the various ages.
This is particularly clear
if we examine the openings (doors, portals, windows) inserted into the
historical buildings.
We can notice more ancient
architectural solutions such as the windows in the north side of S. Stefano
church, of the early Middle Ages, expressing windows with brick arches
or the existence of the opening leading to the Castle.
In the Roman Age the churches
in Cividate have accurate single lancet windows, in accordance with the
features of this widespread style in Camonica Valley.
Since the thirteenth century,
the construction of the towers has enabled us to examine the building techniques
which reveal the high level of specialization in this field.
Doors with arches and t
– keys and narrow loopholes underline the defensive function of such constructions,
while the following reconstructions take other solutions.
The house of “Simona” stone,
easily recognizable for its chromativity, has been introduced since the
14th century.
Crutch portals with horizontal
architraves on brackets spread throughout the village In the following
century and similar examples of this type are numerous in various historical
centres of Camonica Valley.
Decorationsand dates sometimes
allow us to date these handiworks chronologically as the portal to the
Square with the inscrived date 1463 at the side of complex rosettes.
The decoration of “ casa
Laffranchini” portal, also near the square, of the endof fifteenth century
is entirely Renaissance, where pactical aspeets and aesthetics permeate
each other with great harmony.
