A few but outstanding findings
on St. Stefano hill testify that this is probably one of the oldest and
the most interesting site in Valcamonica and in the Alps.
It consists of traces of
a hut and a sort of lithic altar dating to (13th millennium B.C.)
Thanks to this structure
we can state the presence of the earliest human seasonal settlements within
the territory in the Upper Paleolithic, probably a ritual place or part
of a ritual when the first hunters began to go up the valley itself to
hunt as the last glaciers retreated towards the north.
In the same place several
chronological phases have been identified between the Upper Paleolithic
and the Lower Mesolithic (until VI millennium B.C.) which show the presence
of seasonal communities when the valley was covered by vegetation and populated
by fauna.
Hundreds of remains testify
the presence of habitual human settlements in the rocky area of St.Stefano
and that's why it is considered a highly significant site.
In the same place we can
find stratifications of remains, some interesting Neolithic traces of the
first pastoral-farming communities and of the Bronze and Iron Ages (II
– I millennium B.C.)
In addition there are traces
of a 'domus' of the Roman times and medieval findings.
Most of them were found
in the area of St. Stefano and inside St.Stefano church.
Among the prehistoric remains
there are: fragments of pottery and bronze (fibulas, needles), pieces of
a necklace, jewels made of bone and finely carved, engravings, findings
of burial places and rocks which testify defensive structures.
Only part of it has been
brought to light, but the prehistoric site might have been very large.
Moreover this area which
seems a place of meeting and exchanges in the valley, might have had an
important social role. In fact in the same area we find the remains of
a Roman temple and other interesting traces of the Roman times.
We can imagine that the
Romans found a prestigious and well fortified village located in an excellent
position.
It might have been an important
centre and transit road in the area.
